LINEN FABRIC MYTHS AND FACTS
Linen is one of the oldest natural textile materials, yet many myths still surround it. Is linen fabric really too difficult to care for? Is linen always rough and uncomfortable to touch? And is it really suitable only for summer clothing? Let's take a look at the most common claims and separate linen myths from the true properties of linen fabrics.
Myth No. 1: Linen is rough and uncomfortable. It is true that new linen fabric can feel firmer and drier to the touch than, for example, cotton. This is a natural characteristic of flax fibres. With repeated use and washing, however, linen gradually becomes softer and more pleasant to the touch while retaining its strength. The combination of natural texture, strength and gradual softening is one of the characteristic benefits of linen fabrics.
Myth No. 2: If linen wrinkles, it is poor quality. Quite the opposite. Linen's tendency to wrinkle is mainly related to the natural structure of its fibres and their low elasticity. It is therefore not automatically a sign of poor quality. The characteristic natural creases are simply part of the appearance and behaviour of linen fabric. If you are looking for a perfectly smooth textile that does not wrinkle, another type of fabric may be more suitable. But if you appreciate the natural look of linen, its slight imperfections are precisely what give it character.
Myth No. 3: Linen is only suitable for summer. Linen is indeed an excellent choice for warm weather thanks to its breathability and moisture management, but its uses certainly do not end there. The properties of linen fabrics also make them suitable for maintaining comfortable conditions in a wide range of applications. This is why linen textiles are used not only for summer clothing, but also for bed linen, home textiles, curtains, tablecloths and other interior fabrics.
Myth No. 4: Linen fabrics are difficult to care for and do not last long. High-quality linen is an exceptionally strong and durable natural material, making it suitable for textiles that are regularly used and washed. Proper care is, of course, important, just as it is with any natural material. Some linen fabrics may also undergo initial shrinkage, which can be significantly reduced through suitable processing and finishing. With the right choice of fabric and proper care, linen fabric can last for many years.
Myth No. 5: Linen is just a fashion trend. Linen is certainly not new. Flax fibre is one of the traditional natural textile materials with a long history, and its popularity continues precisely because of the combination of properties that modern customers increasingly value – breathability, moisture regulation, strength, durability and a natural appearance. Modern textile technologies also make it possible to produce linen fabrics in a wide range of weights, weaves, colours and finishes. Linen is therefore not a short-lived trend, but a material that continues to adapt to modern requirements.
So how can you recognise a truly high-quality linen fabric? Don't judge the material solely by whether it wrinkles or whether it feels firm at first touch. What matters is the quality of the flax fibre, fabric construction, weight, processing method and final finish. At LINMASTER, s.r.o., we work with linen as a material with a natural character and a wide range of modern applications. And perhaps that is linen's greatest advantage – a natural material that does not go out of style, but develops its own character through use.
